Bolivia Expedition 2005

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

The Confirmation programme offered by St. Thomas’s as preparation to receive this Sacrament usually takes place over a three month period. Our young people work hard and show commitment to this programme and build up unity amongst their peers. As the programme comes to a close the question ‘So what happens next?’ is frequently asked. As a ‘follow up’ to the Confirmation programme in May of 2004, eighteen young people from our parish aged 16/17 will head off to Bolivia on expedition this summer (July/August).

This is an adventurous opportunity aimed at developing the skills and talents that our young people already have. They will share in the organising, leadership, and responsibility of the expedition. Developing awareness of self and others, and contributing to team building in a developing country and exposure to the local culture, poverty and environment.

Our young people are highly motivated and have fundraised much of the £40,000+ we will need to carry out the expedition. Central to this is a project with our Franciscan Friars and Sisters in Bolivia. This is a project of ecology and will benefit the local people and the environment. We will work with the local people and ‘connect’ learning first hand about their lives and culture, learning from them and sharing our talents.

Bolivia is a big undertaking and a lot of organising, as well as hard work to raise the necessary funds. Our young people are talented, they can do this and, in fact, a project of this nature is worthy of the commitment they have already shown. The benefits to them and our community are far reaching; it will be a ‘life changing’ experience and give a completely new perspective on the value of life, their own and others.

Our Parish community have responded extremely generously to our fundraising initiatives it is greatly appreciated and offers real encouragement to our team members. There will be a video diary of our expedition and on our return we will have an evening presentation when we can share with you, first hand, the benefits of our experience.
